Does anyone have an aquatic turtle that knows about filters? I bought a 501 Canister filter by zoo med?

I have two main questions. 1) Is there anything even better? (It is all I could find after going to MANY pet shops. It is amazing how little the people that work there actually know about pets or anything for that matter. I got nowhere with any of them. I found this filter myself after they told me a fish tank filter would do fine…idiots!) ALSO 2) How often (approximately) should I have to change the sponge..etc for the filter with a single turtle less than 2 inches long in about 5 or 6 gallons of water? I read all the info on the internet I could find, and I still don’t know. I was hoping someone with experience here could help me. Thanks!

[Answer]:the 501 is an ok filter for a small tank with a small turtle

you dont have to change the sponge often. its mostly there to catch the big stuff passing through the filter.

a quick rinse of the gross stuff wil be fine. when it starts to fall apart, thats when you can get a new one.

i used to use a 501 and then upgraded to a RENA FILSTAR, they are more expensive but i only have to change them and the charcoal every 3 - 4 weeks.

you dont have to buy the zoo med brand charcoaol. you can just buy a small filter bag and fill it with your own charcoal. this will save you money

you should get a water test kit though. the same ones that fish use. you can test nitrated and ammonia levels, this will give you an approximate timeline on when you need to change the water in your tank.

you should not feed the turtle in that tank either but in another container with some water in it.this will keep it cleaner.
